October 1, 2019 Update: our Diocesan Profile is live! Visit the 11th Bishop of Oregon Search and Transition website to read it and view information on how to apply or nominate a prospective candidate.

The Search Committee met for the second time on Saturday, July 13 at St. Thomas in Eugene. As a result of that meeting, we would like to share an update on our process, and ask for prayers and input from everyone in the diocese.

Process Update

Our first major milestone, and our current primary focus, is to draft and publish an electronic profile of the Diocese of Oregon by October 1.  The profile will be presented to the diocese at the 131st Annual Diocesan Convention October 25 and 26.

We will then begin to receive and process applications.

By March 6, 2020 the Search Committee will discern a slate of three to four people, any of whom we believe would be a good Bishop of Oregon. After the slate is published we will also manage the process for dealing with any nominations by petition.

Then the Transition Committee takes over under the leadership of the Rev. Beth Mallon. This yet-to-be-appointed group will organize opportunities for people around the diocese to get to know the slate.

The Transition Committee will also present the slate to the June 2020 Electing Convention. Delegates to this special convention will include clergy and lay delegates elected by all parishes and missions at their 2020 annual meetings (or otherwise selected as provided in bylaws).

After selection of a bishop-elect, the Transition Committee will continue leading in organizing the bishop’s January 2021 ordination and consecration as well as managing the many details attending a major move.

Prayer Request

Please remember the Bishop Search Committee, the Transition Committee, and delegates to the Electing Convention in your regular prayers and in the prayers of the people each week until we are able to celebrate the ordination of the 11th Bishop of Oregon with the Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church in January 2021.

Dearest Lord God, please grant that all involved in the process of calling the 11th Bishop of Oregon be guided by the Holy Spirit in properly discerning who God wants to lead us in the Way of Love in Western Oregon’s Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement.

Request for Input

Please share any insights, ideas, concerns, or questions about the process. It could be as simple as sharing your three hopes and two worries about the diocese or a new bishop. The best way to communicate is by sending an e-mail at an account I have set up for this process. I will do my best to answer questions within five days.
