Dear siblings in Christ,

Bishop Hanley and I have been deeply troubled by the events in our nation’s capitol.  I offered to write a message to the diocese as Bishop-Elect and he, your Bishop, has graciously agreed to join me.

We continue to reflect on, pray over and think critically about the riot on Wednesday that desecrated our nation’s capitol building.  That day we sat through meetings as the news was breaking and we felt torn between the business at hand and the terrifying violence that was being inflicted upon symbols of our democracy.  Like everyone we’ve spoken to, we were heart-sick and profoundly sobered by the reality of what our country is now confronting.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

El obispo Hanley y yo hemos estado profundamente preocupados por los eventos en la capital de nuestra nación. Ofrecí escribir un mensaje a la diócesis como obispa electa y su obispo, ha aceptado amablemente unirse a mí.

Continuamos reflexionando, orando y pensando críticamente sobre la insurrección del miércoles que profanó el edificio del capitolio de nuestra nación. Ese día asistimos a reuniones mientras se difundían las noticias y nos sentimos divididos entre el asunto que nos ocupaba y la terrible violencia que se estaba infligiendo a los símbolos de nuestra democracia. Como todas las personas con las que hemos hablado, estábamos muy afligidos y con profunda seriedad por la realidad a la que ahora se enfrenta nuestro país.
