St. Paul’s, The Dalles, a 146-year-old Episcopal parish in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, is seeking a full-time rector who can nurture the growth potential of this warm, welcoming, and loving church.
St. Paul’s is on Oregon’s dry and sunny side in one of the state’s most historic cities. Sweet cherry orchards, wheat ranches, and a steadily increasing number of vineyards, wineries, and craft breweries support the local economy. A Google data center at the edge of town continues to expand. Area recreation opportunities abound, from kiteboarding and windsurfing on the Columbia River to fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and mountain biking.
St. Paul’s focus on community service and social justice includes an active neighborhood evangelism team, Backpacks for Kids, and Community Meals. In the last year, the church has committed both money and time to The Dalles’ ongoing effort to help people who are homeless, including the purchase of one of the tiny houses in the Pallet Homes village. St. Paul’s volunteers have helped to build several local Habitat for Humanity houses, and parishioners joined missions to Haiti and to New Orleans to rebuild housing destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The church historically is a major supporter of the Diocese of Eastern Oregon’s Ascension School Camp and Conference Center, sponsoring a number of camper scholarships every summer.
Many of St. Paul’s most active members are well past retirement age. Like many churches it has an aging congregation; pastoral care to older parishioners is a priority, as well as fostering outreach. Parishioners want an inspiring and engaging preacher who can deal with conflicting viewpoints. An emphasis on stewardship is a plus. The compensation offered is from $70,000 to $85,000 a year, plus full pension, health and other benefits. It is anticipated that a rectory will be available.
