Practicing for Apocalypse (Contemplative Mini-Retreat)
October 16, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
What does contemplative practice look like in an era of social unrest and pandemic? When it’s so easy to imagine our world descending into collapse and catastrophe, where is God’s peace to be found?
Christianity, of course, was born amid fever dreams of apocalyptic expectation. As God calls us into the dark depths of wisdom, we’ll revisit the Christian notion of “dying before we die” in the apocalyptic context. Free; donations gratefully accepted. Register in advance. New to meditation? Come at 8:30 for a quick half-hour orientation to a simple mindfulness practice.

Contemplative Mini-Retreats take place every 3rd Saturday, 9:00 am-noon. Join us for meditation, contemplative prayer as we sit together in community, with time for reflection, learning, and support. Guest teachers join us occasionally to address various aspects of the contemplative path.
About the guest presenter: A former Buddhist monk and an ordained American Baptist pastor, the Rev’d Michael Ellick is Director of Public Engagement for Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and leads Peace House – an intentional community for contemplative action in North East Portland.
