Lent Reads: Song in a Weary Throat (Pauli Murray)
March 7 @ 9:00 am - 9:45 am
An event every week that begins at 9:00 am on Sunday, repeating until March 21, 2021
In normal times, Trinity offers three separate book studies during Lent, led by each of our three priests on staff. This year, we will be offering a single book study on a remarkable text: Pauli Murray’s memoir, Song in a Weary Throat. The first African-American woman ordained to the Episcopal priesthood, Murray’s remarkable vocation in the church followed an even more ground-breaking career as a civil rights attorney and activist. Her legal writing formed the basis for Thurgood Marshall’s case in Brown v. Board of Education, and deeply influenced Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s winning arguments for gender equality. A founding member of the National Organization for Women, she is now seen as a pioneering queer Episcopalian. Her witness, writing, and lifelong activism contributed immeasurably to the Episcopal Church’s development on pressing issues of social justice. She was added to the Episcopal Church’s calendar of Saints in 2018.
