An Aural Advent Calendar – Podcast

November 28 @ 9:00 am

(Episodes released daily at trinity-episcopal.org, November 28-December 24)

Column by Canon for Cathedral Life Shana McCauley

“In the silence of a midwinter dusk, there is a sound so faint that for all you can tell it may be only the sound of the silence itself. You hold your breath to listen. You are aware of the beating of your heart. The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment.” —Fredrick Buechner

Advent arrives on the heels of Thanksgiving, when secular culture finally throws off any restraint it may have used and envelops the world in green and red, cinnamon and pine-scented, flashing lights with a muzak Christmas carol soundtrack.

It is a dramatic meeting of church and culture, where without intention, the loudest voice threatens to win and can leave us harried and exhausted when at last we celebrate the birth of the Messiah.

This year, Trinity is offering an alternative—or at least a companion— to the noise: an Aural Advent Calendar, a brief daily podcast to help anchor Advent contemplation & reflection in the midst of the hectic secular Christmas season.

Beginning on November 28, we will release daily meditations exploring theme of waiting. These brief 5-10 minute episodes are original meditations, offered by a variety of Episcopal and interfaith clergy, as well as musicians, poets, and other aural artists.

We hope to tag along with you as you drive to work or linger over coffee, as you prepare dinner or while you get ready for bed – just a brief pause, a moment of quiet to help prepare for the extraordinary thing that is about to happen.

Beginning Sunday, November 28, episodes will be published daily to the Trinity Sermon Podcast – trinitycathpdx.podbean.com – or click one of the icons at the top of that page to subscribe on your favorite podcast platform.

We look forward to joining you on the journey.
